How Exercise Can Benefit Your Business

Updated: Jan 18, 2023

When you’re busy running a business, you can sometimes forget about your own needs. However, when it comes to exercise, it not only makes you feel fitter and healthier but has great benefits for your work too.

Exercise increases productivity

Studies have found that exercise increases energy levels, which can help give you a clearer mind and feel more focussed at work. If you’re prone to the dreaded afternoon slump when you struggle to concentrate on your work, going for a lunchtime walk, popping to the gym to lift some weights or doing a yoga class are all great ways of moving your body and increasing your energy levels, which in turn can improve your mental capacity for learning and retaining information.

Improves performance

While it may be hard to fit in some exercise when you’re busy at work, making time to focus on your fitness helps to feed your brain and make you more efficient at work. You can focus better and have a clearer head to make better decisions.

It’s actually thought that the longer you sit at your desk, the less productive you are, so taking regular breaks and getting your heart pumping in some way can help you feel more motivated and perform better in your job. Some companies now even give employees time off work to exercise to help improve their performance.

Reduces stress

We all know exercise is good for your health but it has great benefits for your mental health too. Physical activity releases feel-good hormones that make you feel more positive and relaxed. Even small amounts of regular exercise can help relieve stress, anxiety and depression and help release any tension in your body.

Combats fatigue

If you’re tired, the last thing you want to do is go to a fitness class or go out for a run, but regular exercise makes you feel more tired and helps you sleep better at the end of the day. This means you are more likely to wake feeling rested and more ready to tackle your day at work - and help avoid that afternoon slump!

Keeps you in good health

There are many physical benefits of exercise, including lowering blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease, managing your weight and strengthening your muscles and bones. When your body is healthier, you are less likely to need to take time off work for sick days or medical appointments.
